The 2024 Kia Picanto has finally made its debut, showcasing substantial design changes that are bound to turn heads. Leaked images that recently surfaced on the internet have been confirmed, revealing an updated appearance inspired by Kia’s higher-end models that feature the distinctive EV9 look.

Let’s take a closer look at the new Kia Picanto, available in both baseline and GT-Line trims.

One glance at the top-of-the-line model is all it takes to notice the striking difference from its predecessor. The front end boasts vertically stacked headlights that meet in the middle, thanks to an LED bar positioned on the upper section of the iconic “tiger nose” grille. Moving to the rear, the taillights are now connected through a sleek light bar running across the tailgate, adding a touch of modernity.

The GT-Line variant sports additional features, such as air intakes on the front bumper, though it remains uncertain whether they serve a functional purpose. On the other hand, the baseline model presents a more seamless front bumper design. Despite its compact size, the GT-Line surprises with its aggressive stance, thanks to a prominent rear diffuser. Wheel sizes range from 14 inches in the base models to 15 or 16 inches in the higher-end variants. For those looking for an extra touch of luxury, a small sunroof option is available.

Under the metal, the 2024 Picanto offers a choice between two powertrains, both are naturally aspirated petrol units, available in 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre capacities. These engines are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox with an optional automated manual transmission. Although power and performance figures are yet to be disclosed.

The infotainment system supports Bluetooth multi-connection, allowing users to pair up to two mobile devices simultaneously. One device can be used for hands-free phone calls and media, while the other is solely dedicated to media use.

Mitsubishi has gone the extra mile to protect the Savana’s exterior, applying a spray-on protectant not only to the bed but also to the lower half of the front bumper and the fender flares. Power is transmitted through a six-speed automatic transmission, powering all four wheels to conquer any terrain with confidence.

Audi’s latest RS6 and RS7 Bronze Edition don’t only boast some upgraded exterior trim but bigger turbos with more boost churning out a whopping 463 kW and 850 N.m. Are these the ultimate Audi RS models then?

Bronze Edition

Clad in a stunning deep black paint job, complemented by resplendent gold wheels, the Audi RS6 Avant and RS7 Bronze Editions provide a trim package one notch above the standard model. Not stopping at appearance alone, Audi has imbued these special editions with enhanced features and an increased top speed, elevating the driving experience to new heights.

Built upon the foundation of the new Performance trim, the RS6 and RS7 Bronze Editions harness the might of a formidable 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. With larger turbos and heightened boost, they generate a breathtaking 463 kW of power and an awe-inspiring 850 N.m of torque.

Audi engineers have spared no effort in refining the performance of these masterpieces. The inclusion of a smaller and lighter centre differential ensures nimble handling, while the newly designed 22-inch wheels, enveloped in sticky Continental Contact Sport 7 summer tires, deliver a precise grip on the road, all while reducing weight by 5 kg per corner.

The Bronze Edition cars arrive in a lustrous Sebring Black crystal effect paint, tastefully paired with matte neodymium gold five-spoke wheels that exude a motorsport-inspired allure. Complementing the exterior aesthetics are black-painted callipers and glossy carbon trim.

Stepping into the cabin, occupants are enveloped in opulence, courtesy of the Audi exclusive Valcona leather package, accentuated by bronze contrast stitching. Further enhancing the experience is a synthetic suede headliner, creating an environment that exudes both luxury and sportiness.

As a testament to their exclusivity, these models come equipped with a host of standard upgrades, including a high-performance Bang & Olufsen sound system, a sport exhaust system boasting black tips, and Dynamic Ride Control. The latter replaces the air suspension with three-way adjustable hydraulic dampers and steel springs, ensuring optimal handling and comfort.

Bronze Edition

The Bronze Edition cars also receive a substantial performance boost, as Audi graciously raises the electronic speed limiter from 250 km/h to an impressive 280 km/h, further amplifying the exhilaration of the driving experience. With the utmost exclusivity in mind, Audi plans to limit the availability of these exceptional vehicles in the United States.

A mere 125 Bronze Edition cars will be sold, with the RS6 Avant accounting for 75 units and the remaining 50 reserved for the RS7. While the pricing of these extraordinary machines remains undisclosed at present, it is unlikely that these special editions will arrive on South African shores.

Coincidentally, Toyota’s Australia branch has announced its plans to introduce 48-Volt Technology to selected Hilux models in Australia by the first half of 2024.

The integration of this technology aims to enhance fuel efficiency by approximately 10% compared to the current 2.8-litre turbo diesel variants.

“We are continually striving to reduce the fuel consumption of our vehicles to help reduce on-going costs for customers, as well as helping reduce our environmental impact, and the addition of 48-Volt Technology to our biggest-selling vehicle line will contribute to this,” — Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations

The 48-Volt Technology will be combined with the existing 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission. It involves the addition of a 48-Volt battery, a small electric motor generator, and other components. Apart from improved fuel economy, this technology will enable a stop/start system, enhance driveability, and reduce noise, vibration, and harshness levels.

The integration of 48-Volt Technology is expected to not only improve fuel consumption but also enhance Hilux’s on-road and off-road performance. This upgrade will make the Hilux more appealing to customers planning weekend getaways or extended excursions into the furthest reaches of the Australian outback.

Mahindra is set to make a significant impact in the South African market with the debut of its highly anticipated 5-door SUV. The global unveiling of the Mahindra Thar 5-door is scheduled to take place in Cape Town on the 15th of August, 2023 and it’s already generating a buzz among car enthusiasts.

Mahindra Thar

Image: Mahindra

This new addition to the Mahindra lineup has been in development for quite some time, with camouflaged test mules spotted on various occasions, keeping curious fans guessing about its true form. Initially, it was expected that Mahindra would introduce its 5-door rival to the popular Jimny towards the end of 2023. However, recent rumours suggest an earlier reveal on a global stage, possibly making it available to a wider audience before its launch in India.

The Thar 5-door is designed to provide a more practical alternative to the current Thar model, offering additional seating capacity and a spacious boot. Positioned above the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door, it aims to cater to the growing demand for versatile SUVs.

In terms of dimensions, the Mahindra Thar 5-door is expected to be noticeably larger than the Suzuki Jimny 5-door. With an estimated length of 3 985 mm, a width of 1 820 mm, and a height of 1 850 mm, the Thar surpasses the Jimny, which measures 3 820 mm in length, 1 645 mm in width and 1 720 mm in height.

Image: BO22

The introduction of two extra doors for the rear passengers implies a longer wheelbase for the Thar. While most reports suggest a 4-seater configuration, the possibility of an extended third row hints at the potential for a 7-seater option. Time will reveal whether a 7-seater Mahindra Thar 5-door becomes a reality.

Mahindra is expected to offer the same engine options as the current Thar 3-door model. Enthusiasts seeking a petrol variant will have access to the 2,0-litre turbocharged engine, while those who appreciate the robustness of a diesel engine can opt for the reliable 2,2-litre option. With the increased dimensions and weight of the 5-door model, Mahindra may fine-tune the engines to deliver slightly higher power outputs.

Related: Mahindra attains the title of the fastest-growing brand in South Africa

As the anticipation builds and the unveiling date draws nearer, the Mahindra Thar 5-door promises to captivate SUV enthusiasts with its practicality, enhanced seating capacity and robust performance. Mahindra’s expansion in the South African market and the global stage further solidify its position as a brand dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of consumers.

With reports of a 3-door test mules having been spotted at Gerotek test facility outside of Pretoria, we’d suggest that it’s only a matter of time before the Thar range is officially introduced to the South African market.

BMW has just revealed the 2024 X1 M35i xDrive which will serve as the most powerful version of its entry-level SUV.

X1 M35i

Image: BMW

At the forefront of the new BMW X1 range is a performance-oriented model that showcases the unmistakable M character.
The X1 M35i xDrive builds upon the core driving pleasure found in the compact Sports Activity Vehicle concept and injects it with the dynamism, agility, and precision that M models are renowned for.

Under the metal, you’ll find a 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine that belongs to BMW Group Efficient Dynamics’ new modular generation of engines. Utilizing M TwinPower Turbo technology, this powertrain churns out an impressive 221 kW of power, or up to 233 kW depending on the market. The peak torque for this model is stated to be 400 N.m.

Image: BMW

The power is efficiently distributed to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system, which is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission featuring a mechanical limited-slip differential.

This differential limits the difference in rotational speed between the front wheels, resulting in improved handling dynamics when tackling corners. As a result, the X1 M35i xDrive can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5,2 seconds, with an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h.

To ensure superior stopping power, BMW has introduced a new integrated brake system. The X1 M35i becomes the first M Performance model to offer an optional M Compound system, equipped with four-piston callipers and 15,2-inch drilled discs at the front and single-piston units with 13,0-inch discs at the rear.
These imposing brakes are finished in gloss grey and are concealed behind either standard 19-inch or optional 20-inch wheels. Additionally, the X1 M35i boasts BMW’s adjustable M Suspension as standard, along with sport steering.

X1 M35i

Image: BMW

Complementing its power and performance, the range-topping X1 features an aggressive exterior design, including larger air intakes on the front fascia, prominent side skirt extensions, a model-specific roof spoiler, and a rear apron with a new diffuser that incorporates quad exhaust pipes.

The cabin of the X1 M35i xDrive doesn’t disappoint either. Alongside optional M sport seats, an Alcantara-trimmed instrument panel, and an anthracite-coloured roof liner, the highlight is the latest version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system.
This model becomes the first from BMW to feature the new iDrive 9 tech, which offers a redesigned home screen and an improved menu structure inspired by consumer electronic devices.

X1 M35i

Image: BMW

With a starting price of $49 900 (approximately R929 000), the X1 M35i xDrive offers an enticing entry point to the world of performance SUVs. Combining power, style, and advanced technology.

The entry level M SUV is yet to be confirmed for South Africa but we speculate it will arrive considering local fervour for the Bavarian brand’s performance models.

Suzuki has unveiled the Suzuki Jimny Rhino, an updated version of their iconic 4WD vehicle. Since its introduction in 1970, the Jimny has been highly regarded for its impressive off-road capabilities and compact design. Continuing this legacy, the Jimny Rhino Edition bring tasty cosmetic enhancements.

While Suzuki Malaysia emphasises that the Jimny Rhino Edition is primarily a cosmetic upgrade, the changes it brings undoubtedly elevate the small crossover’s aesthetics. The vehicle boasts Rhino decals and a vintage-inspired radiator grille, adding a touch of character. The rear end features a matching theme with a spare tyre cover and red mud flaps. Furthermore, the Jimny Rhino Edition introduces a new protection panel for the differential, as well as additional aluminium cladding on the side and front bumpers.

Inside the cabin, simplicity and durability take centre stage. The familiar atmosphere is complemented by new DLX floor mats and an all-black colour scheme. The cabin offers a touchscreen in the centre console, providing access to Apple CarPlay for enhanced connectivity. Additionally, the rear seats feature a 50:50 split, enabling them to be folded flat to create a relatively spacious load bed for accommodating extra cargo.

Regrettably, there are no upgrades to the powertrain, so the Jimny Rhino Edition retains the same 1,5-litre naturally aspirated engine, generating 75 kW of power and 130 N.m of torque. Power is distributed to all four wheels through Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro system with low-range gears. In terms of transmission, the four-cylinder engine is exclusively paired with a five-speed manual gearbox in this configuration.

Suzuki Malaysia plans to offer a limited production run of only 30 units of the Jimny Rhino Edition, making it a rare and potentially coveted off-roader. The pricing for this exclusive edition starts at 174 900 Malaysian Ringgits, approximately equivalent to R698 094.

Will the Jimny Rhino Edition make its way to our local dealerships, allowing South African drivers to experience its captivating allure firsthand? Well, that’s up to Suzuki South Africa! Fingers crossed, we might just spot these unique Jimnys roaming our roads. On the bright side, with the encouraging decrease in rhino poaching numbers, it seems like the Jimny Rhino Edition has a good chance of thriving here in Mzansi.
